al-Ikhtisas: Ibn Qawlaway, from al-Ayyashi, from his father, from Ali bin al-Hussein from Maruk bin Ubayd, from Ibrahim bin Abi al-Bilad from a man, from al-Asbagh I said to him: how was it that you came to be called the Shurta al-Khamis O Asbagh? He said: We guaranteed to fight for him and he guaranteed victory [Fath] for us. [Bihar al-Anwar, Volume 42, Page 180-181]
37 - الاختصاص: ابن قولويه، عن العياشي، عن أبيه، عن علي بن الحسين عن مروك بن عبيد، عن إبراهيم بن أبي البلاد، عن رجل، عن الأصبغ قال: قلت
له كيف سميتم شرطة الخميس يا أصبغ؟ فقال: إنا ضمنا له الذبح وضمن لنا الفتح (1).
16 - Rijal al-Kashi: Nast Bin Al Sabbah, from Ibn Isa, from Al Ahwazy, from Ismail Bin Bazie, from Abu Al Jaroud who said, ‘I said to Al-Asbagh Bin Nubata, ‘What is the status of this man (Ali (a.s)) among you all?’ He said, ‘I don’t know what you are saying except that our swords are upon our shoulders. So, the one who gestures towards us, we will strike him with it. And he (a.s) was saying to us: ‘Form an elite force! By God! Your elite force is neither being formed for the gold nor silver, and your forming the elite force isn’t except for the death! A people from before you, from the children of Israel, had an elite force between them, so not one of them died until there existed a Prophet of his people, or a Prophet of a town, or a Prophet of himself, and you are at their status, apart from that you aren’t with a Prophet.’’
[Muhammad Baqir al-Majlissi] Explanation: Al-Jazry said, ‘A force of the ruling authority is the elite of his companions, those he (a.s) places ahead of others from his army. In a Hadith of Ibn Masoud, ‘And forming an elite force for the death is, they will not be returning except as victors. The elite force is the first party from the army to attend the event’. And Firozabadi said, ‘The elite force is with the responsibility. They are the first battalion to attend the wars, and are prepared for the death, and are a party from the aides of the ruler. They are named with that because they know themselves with the markings they are recognized by’’.
17 - Rijal al-Kashi: Muhammad Bin Masoud Al Ayyashi and Abu Amro Ibn Abdul Aziz who both said, ‘It is narrated to us by Muhammad Bin Nuseyr, from Muhammad Bin Isa, from Abu Al-Hassan Al Gazali, from Giyas Al Hamdani, from Bishr Bin Amro Al Hamdani who said, ‘Amir Al-Momineen (a.s) passed by us. He (a.s) said: ‘Stay in this elite force, for by God! No (Police) will be (formed as a) follow-up after them except the elite force of the Fire, except the one who does the deed like their deeds’’
18 - Rijal al-Kashi: ‘It is reported from Amir Al-Momineen (a.s). He (a.s) said to Abdullah Bin Yahya Al-Hazramy on the day of the camel: ‘Receive glad tidings Ibn Yahya, for you and your father are from the elite force, truly! The Messenger of God had informed me (a.s) with your name and name of your father being in elite force. By God! God has Named you all as ‘Al-Khamis force’ upon the tongue of His Prophet!’ And he mentioned that the elite force were six thousand men or five thousand men.’’
[Muhammad Baqir al-Majlissi] Explanation: ‘Al-Khamis’ is the army named as such because they are divided into five divisions – the vanguard, and the rear guard, and the right flank, and the left flank, and the centre.[Bihar al-Anwar, Volume 42, Page 150-152]
16 - رجال الكشي: نصر بن الصباح، عن ابن عيسى، عن الأهوازي، عن إسماعيل بن بزيع، عن أبي الجارود قال: قلت للأصبغ بن نباتة: ما كان منزلة هذا الرجل فيكم؟ قال: ما أدري ما تقول إلا أن سيوفنا كانت على عواتقنا، فمن أومأ إلينا
ضربناه بها، وكان يقول لنا: تشرطوا (1) فوالله ما اشتراطكم لذهب ولا فضة وما اشتراطكم إلا للموت، إن قوما من قبلكم من بني إسرائيل تشارطوا بينهم فما مات أحد منهم حتى كان نبي قومه أو نبي قريته أو نبي نفسه، وإنكم لبمنزلتهم غير أنكم لستم بأنبياء (2).
بيان: قال الجزري: شرط السلطان: نخبة أصحابه الذين يقدمهم على غيرهم من جنده، وفي حديث ابن مسعود " وتشرط شرطة للموت لا يرجعون إلا غالبين " الشرطة: أول طائفة من الجيش تشهد الوقعة (3) وقال الفيروزآبادي: الشرطة بالضم: هم أول كتيبة تشهد الحرب وتتهيأ للموت، وطائفة من أعوان الولاة، سموا بذلك لأنهم أعلموا أنفسهم بعلامات يعرفون بها (4).
17 - رجال الكشي: محمد بن مسعود العياشي وأبو عمرو بن عبد العزيز، قالا: حدثنا محمد بن نصير، عن محمد بن عيسى، عن أبي الحسن الغزالي (5) عن غياث الهمداني، عن بشر بن عمرو الهمداني قال: مر بنا أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام فقال: البثوا في هذه الشرطة، فوالله لا تلي بعدهم إلا شرطة النار إلا من عمل بمثل أعمالهم (6).
18 - رجال الكشي: روي عن أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام أنه قال لعبد الله بن يحيى الحضرمي يوم الجمل: أبشر ابن يحيى فإنك وأبوك من شرطة الخميس حقا، لقد أخبرني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله باسمك واسم أبيك في شرطة الخميس، والله سماكم شرطة الخميس على لسان نبيه صلى الله عليه وآله، وذكر أن شرطة الخميس كانوا ستة آلاف رجل أو خمسة آلاف (7).
بيان: الخميس: الجيش، سمي به لأنه مقسوم بخمسة أقسام: المقدمة و الساقة والميمنة والميسرة والقلب.
1010 - al-Ikhtisas: From Abu Abdullah (a.s) having said: ‘The Khamese Brigade were from five to six thousand men, helping him (a.s)’’
1111 - al-Ikhtisas: Muhammad Bin Al Husayn, from Muhammad Bin Ja’far, from Ahmad Bin Abu Abdullah who said, ‘Ali Bin Al Hakam said, ‘Companions of Amir al-Muminin (a.s), those he (a.s) said to them: ‘You impose conditions, for I (a.s) shall accept your conditions upon the Paradise, and I (a.s) will not accept conditions upon gold nor silver. Our Prophet, in what has passed, said to his companions: ‘Impose conditions, for I will accept your conditions only upon the Paradise’. And they are Salman Al-Farsi, and Al-Miqdad, and Abu Zarr Al-Ghifari, and Ammar Bin Yasser, and Abu Sinan and Abu Amro the two Helpers, and Sahl the participant of Badr, and Usman two sons of Huneyf the Helper, and Jabir Bin Abdullah Al-Ansari. And from the elite of his (a.s) companions – Amro Bin Al-Hamaq Al-Khuzaie Araby, and Meesam the date-seller, and he is Meesam Bin Yahya, a slave, and Rusheyd Al-Hajary, and Habeeb Bin Muzahar Al-Asady, and Muhammad Bin Abu Bakr. And from his (a.s) friends – Al-Alam Al-Azadi, and Suweyd Bin Gafala Al-Jufy, and Al-Haris Bin Abdullah Al-Awr Al-Hamdani, and Abu Abdullah Al-Jadaly, and Abu Yahya Hukeym Bin Sa’ad Al-Hanafy. And from the ‘Khamese brigade’ were Abu Al-Razy Abdullah Bin Yahya Al-Hazrami, and Suleym Bin Qays Al-Hilali, and Ubeyda Al-Sulmany Al-Muradi Araby. And from his (a.s) special ones – Tameem Bin Hizyam Al-Najy And there had attended with Ali (a.s) in his (a.s) wars – Qanbar a slave of Ali (a.s) Bin Abu Talib (a.s), and Abu Fakhta a slave of the clan of Hashim, and Ubeydullah Bin Abu Rafie, and he was his (a.s) scribe.’’ [Bihar al-Anwar, Volume 34, Page 271-272]
1010 - ختص: عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: كانوا شرطة الخميس ستة آلاف رجل أنصاره [عليه السلام].
1111 - ختص: محمد بن الحسين عن محمد بن جعفر عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله قال: قال علي بن الحكم: أصحاب أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام الذين قال لهم تشرطوا فأنا أشارطكم على الجنة ولست أشارطكم على ذهب ولا فضة،
إن نبينا فيما مضى قال لأصحابه: " تشرطوا فإني لست أشارطكم إلا على الجنة " [وهم] سلمان الفارسي والمقداد وأبو ذر الغفاري وعمار بن ياسر وأبو سنان وأبو عمر والأنصاريان وسهل البدري وعثمان ابنا حنيف الأنصاري وجابر بن عبد الله الأنصاري.
ومن أصفياء أصحابه عمرو بن الحمق الخزاعي - عربي - وميثم التمار وهو ميثم بن يحيى - مولى - ورشيد الهجري وحبيب بن مظهر الأسدي ومحمد بن أبي بكر.
ومن أوليائه العلم الأزدي وسويد بن غفلة الجعفي والحارث بن عبد الله الأعور الهمداني وأبو عبد الله الجدلي وأبو يحيى حكيم بن سعد الحنفي.
وكان من شرطة الخميس أبو الرضي عبد الله بن يحيى الحضرمي (1) [و] سليم بن قيس الهلالي [و] عبيدة السلماني المرادي عربي.
ومن خواصه تميم بن حذيم الناجي.
وقد شهد مع علي عليه السلام [حروبه] قنبر مولى علي بن أبي طالب [و] أبو فاختة مولى بني هاشم [و] عبيد الله بن أبي رافع وكان كاتبه.
