(10) Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Sa’eed narrated from Ahmad bin Yousuf bin Ya’qoob al-Ju’fi from Issma’eel bin Mihran from al-Hasan bin Ali bin Abu Hamza from his father and Wuhayb from Abu Baseer that Abu Abdullah [Imam al-Sadiq] (a.s.) had said: “Every one of you is to prepare himself for the emergence of al-Qa’im even with one arrow because if God knows that one intends that sincerely, He may prolong his life that he may live until the emergence of al-Qa’im and then he becomes one of his assistants and supporters.” [Kitab al-Ghayba of Nu'mani, Page 236]
576. Muhammad Bin Yahya, and Al-Husayn Bin Muhammad, together from Ja’far Bin Muhammad, from Abbad Bin Yaqoub, from Ahmad Bin Ismail, from Amro Bin Kaysan, from Abu Abdullah Al-Ju’fy who said: ‘Abu Ja’far Muhammad Bin Ali (a.s.) said to me: ‘How many Guards are there in your presence?’ I said, ‘Forty’. He (a.s.) said: ‘But our (a.s.) guards are eternal guards. The ones who is a guard amongst us who looks after an animal, there will be for him its weight, and the weight of its (animal) weight so long as it was with him. And the one who is a guard amongst us with weapon would have its weight so long as it was with him. Do not grieve from once, or twice, or three times, or four, for our example and your example is like the example of the Prophet (a.s.) who was in the Children of Israel. So God Revealed to him (a.s.): “If you (a.s.) prepare your (a.s.) people for the fighting, I will Help you (a.s.)’. So he (a.s.) gathered them from the top of the mountains and from other places (other) than that. Then he (a.s.) directed them for it. So they neither struck with their swords, nor did they stab with their spears until they were defeated. Then God Revealed to him: “If you (a.s.) prepare your (a.s.) people for the fighting, I will Help you (a.s.)”. So he (a.s.) called them. They said, ‘You promised us the Help, but no Help came to us’. So God Revealed to him (a.s.): “But, they can either choose to fight or the Fire’. So he (a.s.) said: ‘O Lord ! The fighting is more beloved to me (a.s.) than the Fire’. So he (a.s.) called upon them, and three hundred and thirteen of them answered him (a.s.), the same number of the people of Badr. So he (a.s.) directed them (for the battle). They neither struck with their swords, nor stabbed with their spears, until God victory to them’. [Rawdat al-Kafi, Volume 8, Page 381-382]
Commentary:
Mirza Muhammad Taqi Isfahani: "We should be eager for the Imam’s emergence so that we get a chance to serve him. There are two points in this regard (1) Virtue of obtaining weapons (2) Arranging for troops etc. Issue no. 1: Regarding the obtaining of arms and weapons, Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says in a tradition, “Every one of you is to prepare himself for the emergence of al-Qa’im even with one arrow because if God knows that one intends that sincerely, He may prolong his life.”
I say: The above tradition indicates that God shall prolong the life of such a person, whether he may live long enough to be physically present during the Imam’s emergence or not. Shaykh al-Kulaini (r.a.) in Rawdat al-Kafi through the author’s own chain of narrators narrates from Abu Abdullah Jofi that he said: His Eminence, Abu Ja’far Imam Baqir (a.s.) asked me: How many Guards are there in your presence?’ I said, ‘Forty’. He (a.s.) said: ‘But our (a.s.) guards are eternal guards. The ones who is a guard amongst us who looks after an animal, there will be for him its weight, and the weight of its (animal) weight so long as it was with him. And the one who is a guard amongst us with weapon would have its weight so long as it was with him. al-Majlissi (r.a.) says in explanation of the Imam’s statement: “Our (a.s.) guards are eternal guards” that it is Obligatory on the Shias to dedicate themselves to the obedience of the Imam of Truth and await for the reappearance and prepare to help him. And the Imam’s statement that he would be rewarded twice that means he will be given the reward of one who spends two times that in its weight in gold or silver. And there is possibility that it is an appropriate simile; that is he will get two times the weight of that horse. [Mikyal al-Makarim, Volume 2, Page 479-480]
