Sayyid Ibn Ṭāwūs said in the book Zawāʾid al-Fawāʾid: Ibn Abī al-ʿAlāʾ al-Hamadanī al-Wāsiṭī and Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥuwayj al-Baghdādī narrated, saying: We disputed concerning Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, and his affair became ambiguous to us. So we both went to Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq al-Qummī, the companion of Abū al-Ḥasan al-ʿAskarī, peace be upon him, in the city of Qumm. We knocked on his door, and an Iraqi girl came out to us. We asked her about him, and she said: He is occupied with his feast, for it is a day of Eid. I said: Subḥān Allāh! Verily the Eids for the Shīʿah are but four: al-Fiṭr, al-Aḍḥā, al-Ghadīr, and Friday. She said: Indeed Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq narrates from his master, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAskarī, peace be upon him, that this day is a day of Eid, and it is the greatest of the Eids to the People of the House, peace be upon them, and to their followers.
We said: Then seek permission from him for us and inform him of our presence. They both said: She went in to him and informed him, so he came out to us, covered with a waist-wrapper, exuding musk, and wiping his face. We found this strange. He said: Worry not, for I have performed ghusl for the Eid. We said: First—this is a day of Eid? He said: Yes. And it was the ninth day of the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal. They said: He brought us into his home and seated us.
Then he said: I had gone to my master Abū al-Ḥasan, peace be upon him, just as you have come to me, in Sāmarrāʾ, and I sought permission from him, and he permitted me. So I entered upon him, peace be upon him, on a day like this—the ninth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal—and I saw our master, peace be upon him and upon his forefathers, had instructed each of his servants to wear whatever new garments they could. And before him was an incense burner in which he was burning aloe-wood himself. So I said to him: May our fathers and mothers be your ransom, O son of the Messenger of Allah—has there been renewed for the People of the House on this day a joy?
He, peace be upon him, said: And which day holds greater sanctity with the People of the House than this day—the ninth of the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal? Indeed my father, peace be upon him, narrated to me that Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān entered upon my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah, blessings of Allah be upon him and his progeny, on a day like this. Ḥudhayfah said: I saw the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, and his two sons, peace be upon them, eating with the Messenger of Allah, blessings be upon him and his progeny, while he smiled at them and said to his two sons, al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, peace be upon them: Eat, enjoyably—for blessings and happiness of this day are yours. Verily it is the day in which Allah causes to perish His enemy and the enemy of your grandfather. And it is the day wherein Allah accepts the deeds of your Shīʿah and your lovers. And it is the day in which the word of Allah, majestic is His glory, comes true: "So those are their houses, desolate for the wrong they did." And it is the day on which the Pharaoh of the People of the House, their oppressor, and the usurper of their right was annihilated. And it is the day when Allah presents what they have done of deeds, and makes it as scattered dust.
Ḥudhayfah said: I said: O Messenger of Allah—will there be in your nation and among your companions one who violates these sanctities? He said: Yes, O Ḥudhayfah. A tyrant from the hypocrites will assume authority over them. He will employ vision in my nation, carry upon his shoulder the rod of disgrace, divert people from the path of Allah, distort the Book of Allah, alter my Sunnah, seize the inheritance of my children, appoint himself as a sign, vie with the Imam after me, plunder people's wealth unlawfully, spend it in that which displeases Allah, belie me and belie my brother and my vizier, envy my daughter her right, and she shall supplicate to Allah, exalted is He, against him on a day like this—and He shall answer her supplication.
Ḥudhayfah said: I said: O Messenger of Allah—then supplicate to your Lord that He may destroy him during your lifetime. The Messenger of Allah, blessings be upon him and his progeny, said: O Ḥudhayfah, I do not wish to be audacious toward the decree of Allah, exalted is He, for what has preceded in His knowledge. But I have asked Allah, exalted is He, to make the day in which He destroys him a virtue over all other days, so that it may become a tradition followed by my lovers, the Shīʿah of the People of my House, and their devotees. So Allah revealed unto me—exalted is He, the Majestic—the One who speaks the truth: O Muḥammad, indeed it was in My prior knowledge that you and your Household would be afflicted by the trials and tribulations of this world, and by the oppression of the hypocrites and usurpers from among My servants—those whom you advised, yet they betrayed you; to whom you were pure, yet they deceived you; whom you were sincere with, yet they turned away from you; whom you pleased, yet they belied you; for whom you gathered, yet they abandoned you. But surely, by My power, My might, and My sovereignty, I shall most certainly open upon the one who usurps ʿAlī successorship after you to a thousand gates of the Fire, beneath the lowest depths of the Fiqlūq, and I shall surely burn him and his companions in an abyss over which Iblīs son of Ādam shall overlook, and curse him. And I shall surely make that hypocrite a lesson on the Day of Resurrection, like the Pharaohs of the prophets and the enemies of religion at the Gathering, and I shall resurrect them and their allies and all the oppressors and hypocrites to Hell—blue-eyed, grim-faced, humiliated, bewildered, regretful—and I shall cause them to stray therein forever and ever.
O Muḥammad, verily your confidant and legatee, who shares your rank, shall be afflicted by tribulation from his Pharaoh and the one who usurps [his right]—the one who dares, alters My speech, associates with Me, diverts people from My path, appoints himself as a calf for your nation, and disbelieves in Me upon My Throne. Verily, I have commanded My angels in My seven heavens, and your Shīʿah and your lovers, that they should celebrate on the day I destroy him. And I have commanded them to set up the Throne of My Honor opposite the Frequented House (al-Bayt al-Maʿmūr), to praise Me and seek forgiveness for your Shīʿah and your lovers from the progeny of Ādam, O Muḥammad. And I have commanded the noble scribes to lift the pen from creation on that day—that they write nothing of their sins—as an honor for you and your legatee.
O Muḥammad, I have made that day a day of Eid for you, and for your Household, and for those who follow them from the believers and their Shīʿah. And I have sworn upon Myself, by My might, My majesty, and My elevation in My station, that I shall indeed love whoever celebrates on that day, anticipating its reward as do those who encircle [the throne], and I shall intercede for him concerning his relatives, and I shall increase his wealth if he expands provision for himself and his family. And I shall emancipate from the Fire on each anniversary of that day thousands from your Shīʿah, your lovers, and your followers. And I shall make their effort accepted, their sins forgiven, and their deeds received."
Ḥudhayfah said: Then the Messenger of Allah, blessings be upon him and his progeny, arose and entered the house of Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, and I returned from him, having no doubt remaining about the matter of the second [i.e., the second caliph], until I saw—after the passing of the Messenger of Allah, blessings be upon him and his progeny—that evil became prevalent, disbelief returned, the religion was apostatized, rulership was seized, the Qurʾān was altered, the House of Revelation was burned, innovations were introduced, the religion was transformed, the Sunnah was distorted, the testimony of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, was rejected, Fāṭimah the daughter of the Messenger of Allah was belied, Fadak was usurped from her, the Jews, Christians, and Magians were pleased, while the delight of the Chosen One was angered—and she was not pleased. All the Sunan were changed, assassination was plotted against the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, injustice was manifested, that which Allah had made lawful was prohibited, and that which Allah had prohibited was made lawful. He left people to mint coin from camel hides, struck the cheek of the pure one—peace be upon her—and ascended the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah, blessings be upon him and his progeny, in tyranny and aggression. He lied against the Commander of the Faithful, opposed him, and considered his opinion foolish.
Ḥudhayfah said: So Allah answered the supplication of my master—upon him the best of prayers and peace—against that hypocrite, and matters proceeded until his death came at the hand of his killer. May Allah have mercy on his killer.
Ḥudhayfah said: I entered upon the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, after that hypocrite was killed, to congratulate him on his killing and his descent into disgrace and divine retribution. The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: O Ḥudhayfah, do you remember the day you entered upon the Messenger of Allah, blessings be upon him and his progeny, and I and his two grandsons were eating with him, and he pointed you to the merit of this day, the day you had entered upon him? I said: Yes, O brother of the Messenger of Allah, blessings be upon him and his progeny. He, peace be upon him, said: By Allah, this is that very day in which Allah, Blessed and Exalted, brought joy to the eyes of the children of the Messenger of Allah, blessings be upon him and his progeny. And verily I know for this day seventy-two names.
Ḥudhayfah said: I said: O Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, I love that you make me hear the names of this day—the ninth of the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal. He, peace be upon him, said: O Ḥudhayfah, this is the Day of Rest, and the Day of Relief from Grief and Distress, and the Second Ghadīr, and the Day of the Shedding of Burdens, and the Day of the Bestowal, and the Day of the Raising of the Pen, and the Day of Guidance, and the Day of ʿAqīqah, and the Day of Blessing, and the Day of Vengeance, and the Greatest Eid of Allah, and the Day on which supplications are answered, and the Day of the Greatest Standing, and the Day of Loyalty, and the Day of the Covenant, and the Day of the Removal of Shackles, and the Day of the Regret of the Oppressors, and the Day of the Breaking of the Shīʿah, and the Day of the Banishment of Sorrows, and the Day of Victory, and the Day of Presentation, and the Day of Power, and the Day of Sealing, and the Day of the Joy of the Shīʿah, and the Day of Reflection, and the Day of Turning Back, and the Day of the Greatest Alms, and the Second Eid al-Fiṭr, and the Day of the Path of Allah, and the Day of Swallowing Saliva, and the Day of Contentment, and the Eid of the People of the House, peace be upon them, and the Day in which the Children of Israel triumphed, and the Day Allah accepted the deeds of the Shīʿah, and the Day of Offering Charity, and the Day of Seeking Increase, and the Day of the Slaying of the Hypocrite, and the Day of the Appointed Time, and the Day of the Joy of the People of the House, peace be upon them, and the Day that is Witnessed, and the Day the Oppressor Bites His Hands, and the Day of the Demolition of Misguidance, and the Night Day, and the Day of Testimony, and the Day of Passing Over the Believers, and the Day that is Pleasing, and the Day the Dominion of the Hypocrite Ceases, and the Day of Rectification, and the Day on which the Believers Rest, and the Day of Mutual Prayer, and the Day of Boasting, and the Day of the Acceptance of Deeds, and the Day of Leaning, and the Day of the Leaner, and the Day of Gratitude, and the Day of the Victory of the Oppressed, and the Day of Visitation, and the Day of Affection, and the Day of Lamentation, and the Day of Arrival, and the Day of Blessing, and the Day of Unveiling of Innovations, and the Day of Abstinence from Major Sins, and the Day of the Crier, and the Day of Admonition, and the Day of Worship, and the Day of Submission.
Ḥudhayfah said: So I rose from the presence of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, and said to myself: Were I to attain no deed of good by which I hope for reward save the love of this day, it would suffice me.
Muḥammad ibn Abī al-ʿAlāʾ al-Hamadanī and Yaḥyā ibn Juḥayr said: So each of us arose and kissed the head of Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq, and we said: Praise be to Allah who did not take us until He honored us with the merit of this blessed day. And we departed from him and celebrated that day—it is the Eid of the Shīʿah. End of report.
All praise is due to Allah alone. And may the blessings of Allah be upon Muḥammad and his progeny. Written from the hand of Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṭāʾūs—may Allah have mercy on him. And we found among the books we perused several narrations that are in agreement with it, so we relied upon them. Thus, it is fitting to glorify this indicated day and openly show joy therein in an unrestricted manner, for a secret it holds in its folds in the manner that has appeared, as a precaution due to the narrations. Hence, it is recommended to metaphorically call this day the Day of Eid. [Bihar al-Anwar, Volume 95, Page 351-355]
