Chapter 28 – Permissibility of the Slaughtered Animals of the Various Sects of Muslims and the Prohibition of the Slaughter of the Nāsibī and the Apostate, Except in Cases of Necessity and Taqiyya
Muhammad ibn al-Hasan by his chain from al-Ḥusayn ibn Saʿīd, from al-Ḥasan, from Yūsuf ibn ʿAqīl, from Muḥammad ibn Qays, from Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him), who said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: The slaughtered animal of one who adheres to the word of Islam, fasts, and performs prayer is lawful for you, if the Name of Allah, Exalted is He, is mentioned upon it.
And from him, from al-Naḍr ibn Suwayd, from Zurʿah, from Abū Baṣīr, who said: I heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him) say: The slaughtered animal of the nāṣib is not lawful.
And from him, from Ḥammād ibn ʿĪsā, from al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Mukhtār, from Abū Baṣīr, from Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him), that he said: The slaughtered animals of the Ḥarūriyyah are not lawful. (In some versions: were not made lawful.)
And by his chain from Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā, from Aḥmad ibn Ḥamzah, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī, from Yūnus ibn Yaʿqūb, from Abū Baṣīr, who said: I asked Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him) about a man who buys meat from the market while he has among his brothers one who slaughters and sells, yet he deliberately purchases from the nāṣib. He said: What is it you ask me to say? He eats nothing but the like of carrion, blood, and the flesh of swine. I said: Glory be to Allah! Like blood, carrion, and the flesh of swine? He said: Yes, and graver in the sight of Allah than that. Then he said: Indeed, there is in his heart a disease against the believers.
And from him, from Aḥmad ibn Ḥamzah, from Zakariyyā ibn Ādam, who said: Abū al-Ḥasan (peace be upon him) said: Verily, I forbid you from the slaughtered animal of everyone who is upon other than what you and your companions are upon, except in a time of necessity thereto.
And from him, from Sahl ibn Ziyād, from Aḥmad ibn Bashīr, from Ibn Abī ʿAqīlah al-Ḥasan ibn Ayyūb, from Dāwūd ibn Kathīr, from Bashīr ibn Abī Ghaylān, who said: I asked Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him) about the slaughtered animals of the Jews, the Christians, and the nāṣib. So he twisted his mouth and said: All of it is until a certain day.
And by his chain from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā, from al-Ḥusayn ibn Saʿīd, from Ibn Abī ʿUmayr, from Ibn Udhaynah, from Ḥumrān, from Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him), who said—I heard him say: Do not eat the slaughtered animal of the nāṣib unless you hear him mention the Name.
And from him, from more than one, from Abū al-Mughra, from al-Ḥalabī, and from al-Ḥusayn ibn Saʿīd, from Ibn Abī ʿUmayr, from Ḥammād, from al-Ḥalabī, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about the slaughtered animal of the Murji’ī and the Ḥarūrī. He said: Eat and be at ease until what is to be, is. And it was narrated by al-Kulaynī from ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ibn Abī ʿUmayr; and from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥakam, from Abū al-Mughra similarly. Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn by his chain from al-Ḥalabī similarly.
And in ʿUyūn al-Akhbār, from Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Sanānī, from Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAbd Allāh al-Kūfī, from Sahl ibn Ziyād, from ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm al-Ḥasanī, from Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Maḥmūd, from Abū al-Ḥasan al-Riḍā (peace be upon him)—in a ḥadīth, he said: My father Mūsā ibn Jaʿfar (peace be upon him) narrated to me from his father Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī (peace be upon them all) that he said—in a ḥadīth: Whoever claims that Allah compels the servants to commit acts of disobedience, or burdens them with what they cannot bear—do not eat his slaughtered animal, do not accept his testimony, do not pray behind him, and do not give him anything from the zakāt.
ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Khazzāz in al-Kifāyah, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from Hārūn ibn Mūsā, from Muḥammad ibn Hammām, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar al-Ḥimyarī, from ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī al-ʿAbdī, from Dāwūd ibn Kathīr, from Yūnus ibn Ẓubyān, from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him)—in a ḥadīth, he said: O Yūnus, whoever claims that Allah has a face like faces has committed shirk, and whoever claims that He has limbs like the limbs of created beings is a disbeliever in Allah—so do not accept his testimony and do not eat his slaughtered animal.
