Al-Hurr al-Amili (d. 1693):
Chapter on the Ruling of Rising with the Sword Before the Advent of the Qa'im (Peace be upon Him)
19964 (1) - Muhammad ibn Ya'qub, from Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Safwan ibn Yahya, from ‘Is ibn al-Qasim, who said: I heard Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) say: Fear Allah, the One without any partner, and take care of yourselves. By Allah, a man might have sheep with a shepherd, and if he finds a man who knows more about his sheep than the current shepherd, he will remove the latter and bring the one who knows more. By Allah, if one of you had two souls, he would fight with one and experiment with it, while the other soul would remain to act upon what has become clear to it. But he has only one soul. When it goes, by Allah, repentance goes with it. So you are more deserving to choose for yourselves. If someone from us comes to you, see upon what you are going out. Do not say, "Zayd has risen." Zayd was knowledgeable and truthful and did not call you to himself but to the satisfaction of the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him). If he had succeeded, he would have fulfilled what he had called you to. He only rose against an assembled authority to overturn it. Whoever rises from among us today, to what does he call you? To the satisfaction of the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him). We bear witness that we do not accept him, for he disobeys us today, and he has no one with him. If the banners and standards are raised, it is more likely that he will not listen to us except for those who unite with Banu Fatimah. By Allah, your leader is only the one they unite upon. If Rajab comes, go to the name of Allah. If you wish to delay until Sha'ban, there is no harm. If you wish to fast in your families, perhaps that will be stronger for you. And the Sufyani is a sufficient sign for you.
19965 (2) - And from him, from his father, from Hammad ibn ‘Isa, from Rab’i, who raised it, from Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him), who said: By Allah, none of us will rise before the advent of the Qa'im except that he will be like a fledgling bird that flies out of its nest before its wings are fully developed, so the children play with it.
19966 (3) - And from several of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Uthman ibn ‘Isa, from Bakr ibn Muhammad, from Sudayr, who said: Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) said: O Sudayr, stay in your house, be like a rug among its rugs, and stay calm as long as the night and day stay calm. If you hear that the Sufyani has come out, then come to us, even if you have to walk.
19967 (4) - And from them, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid, from Muhammad ibn Ali, from Hafs ibn Asim, from Sufyan al-Tammar, from Abu al-Marhaf, from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him), who said: Dust is upon the one who stirs it up; the besiegers are ruined. I said: May I be your ransom, who are the besiegers? He said: The hasty ones. They will not prevent the matter from coming to them. He said: O Abu al-Marhaf, do you see people who dedicate themselves to Allah, that He will not make for them an opening? By Allah, He will make for them an opening.
19968 (5) - And from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hashim, from al-Fadl al-Katib, who said: I was with Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) when a letter from Abu Muslim arrived. He said: There is no response to your letter; leave us. Then he said: Indeed, Allah does not hasten for the haste of His servants, and the removal of a mountain from its place is easier than the removal of a kingdom that has not yet reached its term. I said: What is the sign between us and you, may I be your ransom? He said: Do not leave the land, O Fadhl, until the Sufyani comes out. When the Sufyani comes out, come to us - he said this three times - and it is one of the sure signs.
19969 (6) - And from him, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from al-Husayn ibn Sa'id, from Hammad ibn ‘Isa, from al-Husayn ibn al-Mukhtar, from Abu Basir, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: Every banner raised before the advent of the Qa'im (peace be upon him), its bearer is a tyrant who is worshiped besides Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
19970 (7) - And from him, from Ahmad, from Ali ibn al-Hakam, from Abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz, from Umar ibn Hanzala, who said: I heard Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) say: Five signs before the advent of the Qa'im: the cry, the Sufyani, the collapse of the land, the killing of the Pure Soul, and the Yamani. I said: May I be your ransom, if one from your family comes out before these signs, should we go out with him? He said: No... (the rest of the narration).
19971 (8) - And from Hamid ibn Ziyad, from Ubayd Allah ibn Ahmad al-Dahqan, from Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Tatri, from Muhammad ibn Ziyad, from Aban, from Sabah ibn Sayyabah, from al-Ma'la ibn Khunays, who said: I took a letter from Abd al-Salam ibn Naim and Sudayr and other people to Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) when the black banners appeared before the sons of Abbas appeared. We thought that this matter would turn to you; what do you see? He threw the letters to the ground and said: Alas, alas, I am not their Imam. Do they not know that the Sufyani will kill them?
19972 (9) - Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn with his chain from Hammad ibn Amr and Anas ibn Muhammad, from his father, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his forefathers (peace be upon them) - in the will of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) to Ali (peace be upon him). He said: O Ali, the removal of the immovable mountains is easier than the removal of a kingdom that has not yet reached its term.
19973 (10) - And in "Al-Ilal" from Muhammad ibn Ali Majilawayh, from Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Yahya ibn Imran al-Hamdani, and Muhammad ibn Ismail ibn Bazi', all from Yunus ibn Abd al-Rahman, from 'Is ibn al-Qasim, who said: I heard Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) say: Fear Allah and take care of yourselves, for you are the most deserving to look after yourselves. If one of you had two souls, he would present one and test it, while the other would remain to seek repentance. But he has only one soul, and when it is gone, by Allah, repentance is gone. If someone from us comes to call you to our satisfaction, we bear witness that we do not accept him. He does not obey us today when he is alone; how will he obey us when the banners and standards are raised?
19974 (11) - And in "Uyoon Akhbar al-Ridha" from Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Katib, from Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Suli, from Muhammad ibn Zayd al-Nahwi, from Ibn Abi Udon, from his father, from al-Ridha (peace be upon him) - in a narration - he said to al-Ma'mun: Do not compare my brother Zayd to Zayd ibn Ali, for he was one of the scholars of the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). He was angry for Allah and fought His enemies until he was killed in His path. My father Musa ibn Ja'far told me that he heard his father Ja'far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them) say: May Allah have mercy on my uncle Zayd. He called to the satisfaction of the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). If he had succeeded, he would have fulfilled what he called for. He consulted me about his rise, and I said: If you are pleased to be the one crucified at Kinasah, then proceed.
19975 (12) - Muhammad ibn Idris in the end of "Al-Sara'ir" quoting from the book of Abu Abdullah al-Siyari from a man who said: It was mentioned in the presence of Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) about those who rose from the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him). He said: As long as there is a rebel from the family of Muhammad, I and my followers will be fine. I would wish that a rebel from the family of Muhammad would rise and I would bear the expenses of his family.
19976 (13) - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Tusi in "Majalis" from his father, from al-Mufid, from Ibn Qulawayh, from his father, from Sa'd, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ali ibn Asbat, from his uncle Ya'qub ibn Salim, from Abu al-Hasan al-‘Abidi, from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) who said: There was no servant who devoted himself to Allah except that Allah would admit him to Paradise.
19977 (14) - And from his father, from al-Mufid, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Alawi, from Haydar ibn Muhammad ibn Naim, from Muhammad ibn Umar al-Kashi, from Hamdawayh, from Muhammad ibn 'Isa, from al-Husayn ibn Khalid. He said: I said to Abu al-Hasan al-Ridha (peace be upon him): Abdullah ibn Bukayr narrated a hadith and I want to present it to you. He said: What is that hadith? I said: Ibn Bukayr said: Ubayd ibn Zurarah told me: I was with Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) when Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Hasan rose. A man from our companions entered and said to him: May I be your ransom, Muhammad ibn Abdullah has risen. What do you say about going out with him? He said: Stay calm as long as the sky and the earth are calm. Abdullah ibn Bukayr said: If that is the case, there will be no rise and no leader as long as the sky and the earth are calm. Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) spoke the truth, but it is not as Ibn Bukayr interpreted. Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) meant: stay calm as long as the sky from the call and the earth from the collapse.
19978 (15) - Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Radhi al-Mousawi in "Nahj al-Balagha" from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) in a sermon. He said: Adhere to the earth and be patient with trials. Do not move your hands and swords based on the desires of your tongues. Do not hasten for what Allah has not hastened for you. If one of you dies on his bed knowing the right of his Lord, the right of His Messenger, and the right of his family, he dies as a martyr. His reward is upon Allah, and he deserves the reward of what he intended from good deeds. The intention takes the place of the action with the sword. Everything has its time and term.
19979 (16) - Muhammad ibn al-Hasan in "Kitab al-Ghaybah" from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan, from al-Hasan ibn Mahbub, from Amr ibn Abi al-Muqdam, from Jabir, from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him) who said: Stay on the earth and do not move a hand or a leg until you see signs that I will mention to you. And I do not think you will reach them: the conflict of Banu so-and-so, a caller calling from the sky, and the voice coming to you from Damascus... (the narration continues with many signs for the advent of the Mahdi (peace be upon him)).
19980 (17) - Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'id al-Thaqafi in "Kitab al-Gharat" from Isma'il ibn Ayyub, from Abd al-Ghaffar ibn al-Qasim, from al-Mansur ibn Amr, from Zurr ibn Hubaysh, from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). And from Ahmad ibn Imran ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Layla, from his father, from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Minhāl ibn Amr, from Zurr ibn Hubaysh, who said: Ali (peace be upon him) delivered a sermon at al-Nahrawan, then a man stood up and said: O Commander of the Faithful, tell us about the tribulations. He said: When tribulation approaches, it is likened. Then he mentioned the tribulations after him until a man stood up and said: O Commander of the Faithful, what should we do in that time? He said: Look at the family of your Prophet. If they remain, you should remain. If they call for help, help them, and you will be rewarded. Do not surpass them lest the affliction strikes you. Then he mentioned the relief by the advent of the Qa'im (peace be upon him).

13 - باب حكم الخروج بالسيف قبل قيام القائم (عليه السلام) (19964) 1 - محمد بن يعقوب، عن علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن صفوان بن يحيى، عن عيص بن القاسم قال سمعت أبا عبد الله (عليه السلام) يقول: عليكم بتقوى الله وحده لا شريك له وانظروا لأنفسكم، فوالله إن الرجل ليكون له الغنم فيها الراعي، فإذا وجد رجلا هو أعلم بغنمه من الذي هو فيها يخرجه ويجئ بذلك الرجل الذي هو أعلم بغنمه من الذي كان فيها، والله لو كانت لأحدكم نفسان يقاتل بواحدة يجرب بها ثم كانت الأخرى باقية تعمل على ما قد استبان لها، ولكن له نفس واحدة إذا ذهبت فقد والله ذهبت التوبة فأنتم أحق أن تختاروا لأنفسكم، إن أتاكم آت منا فانظروا على اي شئ تخرجون، ولا تقولوا خرج زيد، فان زيدا كان عالما وكان صدوقا ولم يدعكم إلى نفسه، وإنما دعاكم إلى الرضا من آل محمد (صلى الله عليه وآله) ولو ظهر لوفى بما دعاكم إليه إنما خرج إلى سلطان
مجتمع لينقضه، فالخارج منا اليوم إلى اي شئ يدعوكم إلى الرضا من آل محمد (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) فنحن نشهدكم انا لسنا نرضى به وهو يعصينا اليوم وليس معه أحد، وهو إذا كانت الرايات والألوية أجدر أن لا يسمع منا إلا من اجتمعت بنو فاطمة معه، فوالله ما صاحبكم إلا من اجتمعوا عليه إذا كان رجب فاقبلوا على اسم الله، وإن أحببتم أن تتأخروا إلى شعبان فلا ضير، وإن أحببتم أن تصوموا في أهاليكم فلعل ذلك يكون أقوى لكم، وكفاكم بالسفياني علامة (19965) 2 - وعنه، عن أبيه، عن حماد بن عيسى، عن ربعي رفعه، عن علي بن الحسين (عليهما السلام) قال: والله لا يخرج أحد منا قبل خروج القائم إلا كان مثله كمثل فرخ طار من وكره قبل أن يستوي جناحاه فأخذه الصبيان فعبثوا به (19966) 3 - وعن عدة من أصحابنا، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن عثمان بن عيسى، عن بكر بن محمد، عن سدير قال: قال أبو عبد الله (عليه السلام): يا سدير ألزم بيتك، وكن حلسا من أحلاسه، واسكن ما سكن الليل والنهار، فإذا بلغك أن السفياني قد خرج فارحل إلينا ولو على رجلك (19967) 4 - وعنهم، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن محمد بن علي، عن حفص بن عاصم عن سيف التمار، عن أبي المرهف، عن أبي جعفر (عليه السلام) قال: الغبرة على من أثارها هلك المحاصير، قلت: جعلت فداك وما المحاصير؟ قال: المستعجلون، أما إنهم لن يردوا الامر يعرض لهم - إلى أن قال: - يا أبا المرهف أترى قوما حبسوا أنفسهم على الله لا يجعل
