1 – From Muḥammad ibn Sinān who said: ʿAlī ibn Mūsā al-Riḍā, peace be upon them both, was asked about al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī, peace be upon them both, and [about the claim] that he was killed thirsty. He said: “Far be it! From where is this [claim]?! Indeed, God, Exalted is He, sent to him four of the great angels from among the mighty angels. They descended to him and said: ‘God and His Messenger send you peace and say: Choose – if you will – either that you choose the entire world and what is in it, and We shall empower you over every enemy of yours; or [you choose] the ascension to Us.’ So al-Ḥusayn, peace be upon him, said: ‘[Upon] God and the Messenger of God [be] peace. Rather, [I choose] ascension to Him.’ And they handed to him a drink of water, and he drank it. Then they said to him: ‘Indeed, you shall never thirst after it, ever.’”
270/2 – And from him, from al-Riḍā, peace be upon him, who said: “An angel descended upon al-Ḥusayn, peace be upon him, and his companions had complained to him of thirst. So he said: ‘Indeed, God, Exalted is He, sends you peace and says: Do you have any need?’ So al-Ḥusayn, peace be upon him, said: ‘He is the Peace, and from my Lord is peace.’ And he said: ‘My companions have complained to Me – [of something] He knows better than I – of thirst.’ So God, Exalted is He, revealed to the angel: ‘Say to al-Ḥusayn: Trace for them with your finger behind your back, and they shall be quenched.’ So al-Ḥusayn traced with his index finger, and a river of white milk, sweeter than honey, flowed forth. So he and his companions drank from it. Then the angel said: ‘O son of the Messenger of God, do you permit me to drink from it? For it is exclusive to you, and it is the sealed nectar, whose seal is musk – “and for that let the competitors compete” (83:26).’ So al-Ḥusayn, peace be upon him, said: ‘If you desire to drink from it, then it is before you.’” [al-Thaqib fi al-Manaqib, Page 327-328]
